Dee Henderson (Cap'n Pete)
|
R.I.P. ....Memphis blues disk jockey whose voice hosted Cap'n Pete's Blues Cruise in his time slot, Friday 9 pm-midnight on the city's volunteer radio station, WEVL, for 26 years (He was one of the patriarchs of WEVL). It is believed that he was shot twice in the back by his grandson, Cortez Thomas (30), and died in Memphis, Tennessee on July 15th 2008 at the age of 72.
His funeral was held at the Cathedral of God Holy Word Temple, and was said to be a joyous celebration of his life. Cap'n Pete's wishes were carried out: the blues were played at his funeral service and the procession drove down Beale Street after passing by WEVL. Dee Henderson was proud to have won a "Keeping the Blues Alive" award from The Blues Foundation in 1992 for his commitment to blues music.
