Sarah-Jayne Mulvihill ( nee Poole ) |
Canterbury born Sarah-Jayne was a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force (which she had joined in 1997) - she was a flight operations officer based at RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, England. She was the first British servicewoman to be killed in Iraq whilst on active duty, in fact, she was the first British servicewoman to be killed in action in 22 years. The unfortunate event happened on 6-May-06 during Sarah-Jayne's second deployment to Iraq when she was killed in a helicopter crash along with four others (their Lynx helicopter was shot down over Basra in southern Iraq). Her funeral, which was conducted at Canterbury Cathedral, was attended by more than 450 mourners (including 350 RAF personnel). She was 32 years old.
