Bruce Duncan Phillips (U. Utah)

Bruce 'Utah' Phillips was born Cleveland, Ohio - he was a folk singer, songwriter and political activist. His three years service in the US Army had a big influence on his social and political thinking. Some of the sights of devastation and human misery he saw in Korea deeply affected him, when he returned to the United States he began drifting, and riding freight trains around the country. These experiences would find its way into his song writing and politics. He was a member of the Industrial Workers of the World, the radical trade union movement popularly known as the IWW or "Wobblies".
He ran for the U.S. Senate as a candidate of Utah's "Peace and Freedom Party" in fact, in 1976 he even also ran for president of the United States representing the 'Do-Nothing Party'. His music remained powerful through the rest of his life. However, in 2004 he was made aware that he had heart disease, and health problems forced him to retire from touring in 2007.
Utah Phillips, “the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest,” passed away as a result of congestive heart failure at his home in Nevada City, California. He was 73 years old. . . . . . Refer also to :- www.utahphillips.org
