Stephen Paul Carroll |
48 year old Constable Stephen Carroll was a married man with children from the Banbridge area of County Down in Northern Ireland. He had served with the Police for over twenty years. He was killed on Monday 9-March-2009 at Lismore Manor, Craigavon, County Armagh. He was doing his job - responding to an emergency call by a distressed citizen. He was shot in the head by dissident republicans from the Continuity IRA - in an action which has disgusted the country which has made great progress in its peace process. Constable Carroll was the first PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland ) officer to have been murdered by paramilitaries since the force was formed in 2001, in fact he was the first police officer to be killed as a result of the 'troubles' for over a decade. This atrocity happened just 48 hours after two young British soldiers were killed outside the Massareene Barracks. Stephens funeral, a requiem mass, was held on 13-March-09, it was attended from all sides of the political and religious spectrum.
