Mary Thomas |
Mary Thomas was the mother of Hall of Fame basketball star and Florida International coach Isiah Thomas. Mary Thomas’s struggle to raise and protect her children from gang violence and drugs on Chicago’s West Side was turned into an Emmy-winning television movie, A Mother’s Courage: The Mary Thomas Story (1989), starring Alfre Woodard. . . . She died on Wednesday 13-January-2010 in Hinsdale, Illinois, near Chicago. The New York Times reported that "Her death was confirmed by a spokeswoman for Adventist Hinsdale Hospital, who did not specify a cause. Ms. Thomas had open-heart surgery in November, on the same day her son, a former head coach and executive with the Knicks, made his debut as the coach of Florida International University." . . . She was age 86 years.
